I get asked the above question quite frequently, so I'll answer it. Realtors are licensed real estate professionals who are members of the National Association of Realtors, their particular State Association of Realtors and their local Board or Association of Realtors. In my case it's the Northern Adirondack Board of Realtors, of which I am a Director on the Board. Realtors must abide by a strict Code of Ethics, and their job is to ensure you get what you need throughout the entire home buying and selling process. A licensed real estate agent does not have to join the Association of Realtors, but it doesn't make sense not to in this day and age.
We are a wonderful group of people who are always looking out for our clients and our communities. For instance, Realtors have become instrumental in seeing that the plans for the re-opening and further development of the Big Tupper ski area happens. We stood up, all however hundreds of thousands we are, and said to the APA - "This must happen!" We can also be found building houses for Habitat for Humanity and Mentoring our youth in the community. We go to our state capital on Lobby Day to lobby for things that our communities have told us they want, like lower taxes. Our goals are your goals. It is something I take very seriously, as do most of my colleagues.
Please remember that not all Brokers and agents are REALTORS. Look for the REALTOR "R" when you hire a real estate professional.
Happy New Year to all! Next post will be Tuesday, January 5th, 2010.
