I have an "Alice's Restaurant" type story. I was riding my motorcycle earlier today and was coming up Rt. 73 from Keene. I decided to stop in the very large parking lot for the Ski Jumps, which is right across from where the Horse Show is taking place. There was no one around me for at least 100 yards. There I am, standing there, stretching my legs and watching the hoses across the street. Mind you, I was not in view of the actual show, just people riding, warming up and getting ready for their run. So there I am, standing there and I hear a "sir?" from behind. Much to my surprise, I turn around to see a NYS Trooper behind me. I said "yes, how are you?" Again to my surprise I hear " Sir, you can't stand here unless you pay to go to the Ski Jumps or the Horse Show..." I couldn't but say sarcastically "yeah, the lot here looks really full..." He continued to say that neither Venue wants "Free Loaders". I thought that was an interesting statement, considering that I was really just stretching my legs.
I was envisioning something like the Alice's Restaurant song, picturing myself in cuffs being hauled off to jail for stopping to stretch my legs. All joking aside, what have we become when a body can't pull over to an empty parking lot to stretch their legs and be accused of being a free loader by a NY State Trooper. God forbid any of my real estate clients go through this. I would be in fear of loosing a client and the town loosing some tax revenue. To a degree, if this is what our tax dollars are going to, there needs to be a change. This is a tourist town. People come here to have fun, not be harassed by our local law enforcement for something that one can't even call an offence!
